BIRTH, INFORMED. is a 6-part series on how the hospital system actually works, created by Dr. Abigail Prushansky, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CNM, and taught by Abigail and Christy Cannon, WHNP, CNM, two midwives with over 40 years of combined experience navigating hospital systems. Know your options, understand your rights, and feel confident partnering with your care team. Based in Los Angeles’ South Bay and serving the Westside and Beverly Hills, but open to families anywhere in the United States. Both the recorded series and the live cohort are virtual, so you can join from wherever you live.

Who it's for

Expecting parents planning a hospital birth, especially first-time parents, anyone who wants a real voice in their care, and the partners and support people who'll be in the room.

Hospital classes cover what may occur during your birth. BIRTH, INFORMED. teaches you how to navigate the system, so you can ask the right questions and work with your care team.

Why it matters

Birth trauma and mistreatment in maternity care are increasingly recognized. In a 2023 CDC survey of 2,402 mothers, 1 in 5 reported mistreatment during pregnancy and delivery care, such as being ignored when they asked for help, being yelled at or scolded, or being pressured to accept care they didn't want. Rates were higher for Black (30%), Hispanic (29%) and multiracial (27%) mothers. Source: CDC, 2023

BIRTH, INFORMED. aims to help lower these rates across the United States by preparing birthing people and their partners to understand the system, speak up, and partner with their care team.
